Do freedom and trust go hand in hand? In the case of North Dakota, perhaps. According to the State Data Lab's trust in state government rankings, North Dakota came in first place; also, they took the number one spot in Mercatus Center's freedom index. Wyoming (#36 freedom index) and Utah (#10) also reported high levels of trust from their residents. Illinois (#45) came in as the least trusted state in the nation, followed by Maine (#39) and Rhode Island (#46). It seems as though most states report similar levels of trust and freedom, or a lack thereof. Hopefully more states will follow North Dakota's good example to gain the trust of their residents.
