Last week it was announced that the President wants to cut funding for food stamps. California and Texas have the largest population relying on food stamps among the 50 states. California, Texas, and Florida all have over three million food stamps participants each. The number of people on food stamps in California has increased by 48 percent since the recession in 2009. The 50 state average is 800,000 food stamp participants, which is three million fewer participants than California. The number of Texans who rely on food stamps increased by 30 percent in the last ten years. In 2018, the federal government spent $68 billion on food stamps. To be eligible for food stamps you must be 130 percent below the poverty line or make less than $2,252 a month. Ninety-two percent of food stamps funding went directly to the recipients and the remaining funding when to state administration.
