Business Bankruptcy Filings and Nonbusiness Bankruptcy Filings are defined by the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts as follows:  "Section 101 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code defines consumer (nonbusiness) debt as that incurred by an individual primarily for a personal, family, or household purpose. If the debtor is a corporation or partnership, or if debt related to operation of a business predominates, the nature of the debt is business." Total Bankruptcy Filings is the sum of business and nonbusiness filings; this number includes Chapter 7, Chapter 11, Chapter 12, and Chapter 13 bankruptcies. As the federal courts handle all bankruptcies, these totals comprise all bankruptcies filed in a state.
