24/7 Wall St. ranks all 50 states based on an index of measures in the following areas to report the Best and Worst Running States for the year: 1) unemployment rates, 2) pension funded ratio, 3) credit rating and outlook, and 4) poverty rates. The states are ranked from 1-50, with one being the best-run state and 50 being the worst-run state.

The index is based on metrics from many different sources, including the U.S. Census Bureau, the Pew Charitable Trusts, the National Association of Budget Officers (NASBO), the FBI Uniform Crime Report, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), and the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA).  For more detailed information see their Methodology.
