WalletHub conducts a comparative study to determine the retirement-friendliness of 50 states in three key “dimensions”: 1) affordability (40 points), 2) quality of life (30 points)  and 3) healthcare (30 points).

Each dimension was based on 41 relevant metrics listed on the website. A 100-point scale was created to grade each metric where a score of 100 represents the most favorable state for retirement. An overall score for each state was calculated using the weighted average values across all metrics. WalletHub compares these overall scores to rank states from 1-50, ranking them from best to worst states for retirement.

Data used in this ranking were collected from the following sources: the U.S. Census Bureau, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Council for Community and Economic Research, U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Retirement Living Information Center, Genworth Financial, United Health Foundation, County Health Rankings, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, Charity Navigator, Gallup Healthways, GolfLink, The Tax Foundation, America's Scenic Byways, NOAA Office for Coastal Management, U.S. News & World Report, Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, and WalletHub.
