The Employment Rate by Sex, Male represents the percentage of the male portion of the civilian non-institutional population (the number of people aged 16 and older who are not incarcerated or on active duty in the military) in a state that is employed. The percentages given were calculated by the Bureau of Labor Statistics by dividing the number of employed men in the civilian labor force by the total number of men in the civilian non-institutional population.

The Employment Rate by Sex, Female represents the percentage of the female portion of the civilian non-institutional population in a state that is of the female sex. This data reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics is obtained from the Census Bureau's Current Population Survey (CPS).
