America’s Health Ranking, by the United Health Foundation, is the longest-running annual assessment of the health of residents in each state. For nearly three decades, America’s Health Rankings Annual Report has analyzed a comprehensive set of behaviors, community and environmental conditions, policies, and clinical care data to provide a holistic view of the health of the nation. The measures used in this report for ranking include data on smoking, drinking, obesity, physical activity, diabetes, nutrition, and several others.

Collected data are then used to form an overall health rating and ranking for each state accordingly. Higher rankings (e.g. 1-5) indicate states with healthier people, lower rankings (e.g. 45-50) indicate states with less healthy people.
