Imprisonment rate by state refers to the number of prisoners per 100,000 U.S. residents of all ages under state or federal jurisdiction who are sentenced to more than one year in prison. Statistics come from the National Prisoner Statistics (NPS) Program, "Table 7. Imprisonment rates of U.S. residents, based on sentenced prisoners under the jurisdiction of state or federal correctional authorities, by jurisdiction, sex, and age, 2018 and 2019"
Note: Total and state estimates include imputed counts for North Dakota and Oregon, which did not submit 2016 NPS data. See Methodology, p.p. 27-29.
