Medicaid is a health care program that assists low-income families or individuals in paying for long-term medical and custodial care costs. Medicaid is a joint program, funded primarily by the federal government and run at the state level, where coverage may vary.

Here we report two sets of data due to a change in methodology.  The 2000-2013 data are based on December totals, and with further data based on annual averages.  The Kaiser Family Foundation updates this dataset every month but our data is calculated on a yearly basis by averaging the enrollment by month for all 12 months of the year.

Medicaid enrollment share of the population is the percentage of a state's population enrolled in Medicaid in a given year.
