This is the federal government's estimate for total nonfarm employment on the United States, based on a monthly survey of payrolls, which is called the 'establishment survey'.  According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, "All Employees: Total Nonfarm, commonly known as Total Nonfarm Payroll, is a measure of the number of U.S. workers in the economy that excludes proprietors, private household employees, unpaid volunteers, farm employees, and the unincorporated self-employed."

The federal government also publishes a different estimate for total employment based on a monthly survey of households (the 'household survey) which is called Employment Total on Data-Z.
