The suicide rate given here is the number of suicides for every 100,000 residents in a state. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) define suicide as follows: "Death caused by self-directed injurious behavior with any intent to die as a result of the behavior." The CDC publishes annually the number of total suicides in a state and the derived suicide rate.
