Letter to the editor by David Hanson, includes “In 1913, the 16th amendment to the Constitution was ratified instituting a national income tax. Only 3% of the population was subject to paying the tax. Over the intervening century, more and more citizens were subject to increasingly higher tax rates and the tax code morphed from a few pages to the tens of thousands of pages that provide a handsome living for hordes of tax accountants and attorneys. …”
