Michigan to collect sales tax on online purchases

“The Michigan Department of Treasury will start collecting its 6 percent sales tax on online sales following the Supreme Court decision in South Dakota v. Wayfair. This landmark case overturned a previous ruling that said state governments can only collect sales taxes from businesses located in their state. … Although there has not been an online sales tax in Michigan, the state’s “use tax” required online purchasers to self-report their purchases on their tax returns, but purchasers rarely complied.”
